Typhoon Wind Signal

Super Typhoon PAGASA Redefines Wind Signal

Redefined Signal Changes

The Philippines has recently experienced several extremely high-impact tropical cyclones. The highest possible Wind Signal that might be raised during the passage of AGHON is Wind Signal No. 4, indicating that winds of 39-61 km/h may be expected in at least 36 hours or that intermittent rains may be expected within 36 hours.

PAGASA's Wind Signal Updates

PAGASA, short for the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, is responsible for keeping the public informed about severe weather events. In an effort to provide more accurate and timely warnings, PAGASA has recently updated its wind signal system. The changes are as follows:

  • Wind Signal No. 1 is now issued when sustained winds of 39-61 km/h are expected within 36 hours.
  • Wind Signal No. 2 is now issued when sustained winds of 62-88 km/h are expected within 24 hours.
  • Wind Signal No. 3 is now issued when sustained winds of 89-117 km/h are expected within 18 hours.
  • Wind Signal No. 4 is now issued when sustained winds of 118-165 km/h are expected within 12 hours.
  • Wind Signal No. 5 is now issued when sustained winds of 166 km/h or higher are expected within 6 hours.

These changes are designed to provide the public with more time to prepare for severe weather events. By issuing warnings earlier, PAGASA hopes to reduce the risk of damage and injury.
